Switching GPS tracking providers without replacing your hardware

The re-installation cost is the main reason unhappy fleets stay put. For most trackers it is avoidable — the device can be pointed at a different server without a workshop visit.

Why fleets think they are stuck

A fleet manager with sixty vehicles and a provider that will not return calls faces an arithmetic problem: sixty vehicles off the road, sixty new units, sixty installations. Priced that way, staying put is rational.

The arithmetic is usually wrong. It assumes the tracking device is bound to the provider. In most cases it is not. The device is a small computer that opens a TCP connection to a server address and sends messages in a defined protocol. Change the address, and it sends to somewhere else.

How server redirection actually works

Most commercial GPS trackers accept configuration commands, typically over SMS or over the air. Among those commands is the server IP or hostname and port the device reports to.

  1. The new provider confirms the device model and its protocol are supported.
  2. A configuration command is sent to the device's SIM, setting the new server address.
  3. The device reconnects to the new platform and begins reporting.
  4. Both systems can run in parallel for a period while you verify the data.

No workshop visit. No vehicle downtime. No new hardware cost.

The open-source protocol ecosystem this relies on is large. Platforms built on it commonly support 200 or more device protocols, covering most mainstream wired, OBD, battery and solar trackers.

What determines whether your devices can move

Four things determine feasibility:

What to check before you start

  • Read your contract first. Establish the renewal date and the notice deadline before anything else. This determines your timeline, not the technical work.
  • Establish who owns the hardware. If it was bundled into the monthly fee, title may not have passed.
  • Get one device tested before committing. A credible provider will connect a single unit and show you live data. If they will not, that tells you something.
  • Ask about your historical data while you are still a paying customer. Leverage evaporates the day you give notice.

Migrating your history

Position history is your data, not the vendor's. Whether you can get it out depends on what the outgoing provider offers — an export in CSV, Excel or JSON, or API access.

Where an export is available, a competent incoming provider can import it so your reports do not restart from zero. Where it is not, you keep the export as a flat archive and the new platform's history begins on cutover.

Ask for the export before serving notice. It is a routine request from a current customer and an awkward one from a departing one.

Questions to ask a prospective provider

  • Do you support my exact device model? Show me it working before I sign.
  • Can you redirect over the air, or does this need a workshop visit?
  • Will you run in parallel with my current system while I verify?
  • Can you import my historical data if I can obtain an export?
  • If I later leave you, what do I take with me, and in what format?

The last question matters most. A provider comfortable answering it is not relying on lock-in.
